High-power LEDs are highly effective and particularly bright light-emitting diodes. Constant current is conducted through a semiconductor, more specifically through semiconducting crystals, which causes electrons to vibrate and thus to light. According to this principle, called electroluminescence, high-performance LEDs create up to 100 lumen light per watt. For example, a High Power LED with 5 watt power generates up to 500 lumen brightness. High-power LEDs consume a larger amount of electricity and need a higher current than conventional LEDs, for example 700mA. They transform the energy supplied into light resp. photons and thereby produce extremely intensive light, but thermal energy as well. That in turn makes cooling neccessary. For that reason, at the High Power LED’s backside there is a metall PCB as cooling option and for heat dissipation. Frequently the whole housing of a high-performance light diode serves as cooling element.

The great advantage of high-performance light diodes resides in their high luminous efficacy with minimum dimensions. However, luminous intensity and efficiency are affected by the junction temperature. That is the temperature within the light-emitting diode at the transition from positively conducting to negatively conducting material. A junction temperature, that is too high, would reduce the diode‘s light output as well as its lifetime. In order to ensure the desired luminous efficacy and an optimun mode of action, the junction temperature should always lie within the pre-set values.
