LED lamps typically operate on 12 or 24 volts, with some models requiring even lower voltage. Consequently, they cannot be powered directly by the standard 230-volt mains supply. Voltage converters are required to connect these systems to the standard power grid and transform the mains voltage. Voltage converters are used to alter an input voltage—for instance, by stepping down the 230-volt mains voltage to a low-voltage level. These electronic components are also known as DC/DC converters. The conversion process is carried out using a switch and an energy storage unit, with intermediate energy storage achieved via an inductor and a transformer.
