General Information on Protection Against Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing materials such as gas, wood, coal, oil, or pellets. Because carbon monoxide cannot be detected by human senses, even low concentrations pose a significant health risk. Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in the blood much more strongly than oxygen, thus preventing sufficient oxygen supply to organs and tissues.
Protection from Carbon Monoxide
- Have fireplaces, heating systems, chimneys, and stoves regularly serviced by qualified professionals.
- Never block or cover ventilation openings.
- Use gas-powered appliances only according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Never operate charcoal grills, camping stoves, or patio heaters indoors or in enclosed spaces.
- Ensure adequate fresh air supply when operating fireplaces or stoves.
- Install a certified carbon monoxide detector in living areas and near fireplaces.
Possible Damage from Carbon Monoxide
(These figures are guidelines; individual reactions may vary.)
- 30–50 ppm: Prolonged exposure usually does not cause acute symptoms; sensitive individuals may experience initial symptoms
- 100–200 ppm: Mild headache, fatigue, impaired concentration after 2–3 hours
- 200–400 ppm: Severe headache, dizziness, nausea within 1–2 hours
- 400–800 ppm: Life-threatening poisoning possible; confusion, collapse, or unconsciousness within 45 minutes to 2 hours
- 800–1,600 ppm: Acute danger to life; unconsciousness within a short time, death possible
- over 1,600 ppm: Very rapid, severe poisoning; Fatal within minutes
What to do if a carbon monoxide detector sounds
- Remain calm, but act immediately
- Open windows and doors to let in fresh air
- Immediately evacuate everyone to safety
- Do not operate any electrical switches or light any open flames
- Turn off any fireplace, heating appliance, or gas supply – if it can be done safely
- Contact the fire department or emergency services (112), especially if you experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, or nausea
- Do not re-enter the building until the cause has been professionally investigated and clearance has been granted
Important:
A carbon monoxide detector does not replace regular maintenance of heating and combustion systems, but it provides important additional protection for human lives.
